Indiana Sports Photography: CMA Varsity Football vs. North Judson

Last night, the Culver Academy Eagles Varsity Football Team hosted North Judson High School for a home game on Culver Academy’s campus. North Judson proved to be a tough opponent who lead most of the game. In an exciting second half, Culver’s offense scored and put Culver within a touchdown of North Judson. Meanwhile, Culver’s defense did a fantastic job of holding North Judson and keeping them from advancing their lead. In the last couple minutes of the game, CMA scored and took the lead, which they held for the remainder of the game. The final score was Culver 20, North Judson 19.

For those that might be curious, I’ve chosen to lead this blog entry off with a photo of Culver’s Eagle mascot as last night was the mascot’s birthday. This co-ed suits up the Eagle custume each week. Happy Birthday Emily!

Indiana Sports Photography: CCHS Volleyball

The other day was a busy day in Culver, Indiana for volleyball. At the Culver Community school, Culver Middle School had two games: the 7th grade team and 8th grade team. Both teams hosted Triton Middle School. Almost at the same time, Culver Community High School hosted Breman’s JV and Varsity Volleyball teams. I couldn’t attend every game as I can be in only one place at a time. I did manage to photograph 3 of the 4 games. The girls of CCMS and CCHS played well. Unfortunately, Culver’s opponents won. Regardless, the games were fun to watch, and Culver has some talent that is worth following in the coming years. I’ve posted some photos here. Others can be found at:

Indiana Sports Photography: Culver Academy Cross Country

Earlier this week, I had the chance to shoot the CGA and CMA cross country teams as they hosted a meet against Triton High School. The weather was nice but windy on Culver Academy’s campus as the kids ran along the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee. Culver did very well and won both the boys and girls meets. CGA Junior, Kacie Hermanson, was the winner for CGA. Some followers of this blog might recall that I met and shot Kacie over this past summer. I always enjoy when I actually know some of the kids and have some favorites to cheer for when I’m shooting sports. Way to go, Kacie! The other great thing about shooting this meet is that you get to see some of the beauty of Culver’s campus.

I’ve posted a few photos here. Other photos can be found at:

Indiana Sports Photography: CGA JV Soccer vs. CCHS

The other morning, I shot the CGA JV soccer team as they hosted the girl’s JV team from Culver Community High School on Culver Academy’s campus. With this being a match between the two local schools that I follow, I found myself in the awkward position that I couldn’t cheer for one team over the other. I love the school I graduated from, but I have grown to love the community I live in, so I cannot root for either side. Ultimately, I hope for a tie. This game was a lot of fun to watch as both teams were very evenly matched. THe pictures show just how determined the girls played on both sides. The girls from CCHS won by one goal. I’ve posted some photos here. The other jv pictures from this game are located at http://www.culverphotos.com/9_04_10_soccer.

Indiana Sports Photography: CMA Varsity Soccer vs. CCHS

The other day, I attended the CMA Varsity soccer game as they played against the CCHS team at Culver Community High School. Unfortunately, I was at the game only about 15 minutes before the weather changed and it started a severe downpour. As there was no lightning, the game continued but there was too much rain to get decent photos and I decided to leave to protect my gear. I’ve posted some photos here. The others that I took before leaving are located at: http://www.culverphotos.com/p84303042.

Indiana Sports Photography: CGA JV and Varsity Soccer vs. Concord

A few days ago, I shot the CGA girl’s JV and Varsity soccer teams as they hosted the teams from Concord High School at Culver Academies. All the teams played well, but ultimately both the JV and Varsity teams from Concord were victorious. I’ve posted some photos here. Others are located at:

Indiana Sports Photographer: Busy Afternoon

Yesterday was a busy afternoon for sports on Culver Academy’s campus with three home games scheduled. The afternoon started off cloudy, but things cleared and all the games were played. The first event was a JV tennis match against LaPort LaLumiere. The men’s JV soccer team played next against Chesterton High School, and it was followed by the CMA varsity soccer game against Chesterton.

All of the teams played well. The JV soccer team won by two goals, and the varisty soccer team lost by two goals. The Chesterton soocer team is a good opponent for Culver as both the JV and Varsity teams were well matched with no clearly dominant team. The final scores could have easily gone the opposite way.

Indiana Sports Photographer: CMA Varsity Football vs. Northwood

The other night, Ginny and I shot the first regular season home game of the CMA Eagles against the Northwood Panthers. It was played on Culver Academy’s campus overlooking Lake Maxinkuckee. I was looking forward to this game, as this was the first sporting event at which I could use my new camera, the Nikon D3S. I purchased it over the summer and shot some weddings with it, but I hadn’t been able to use it for action shots.

For the camera buffs out there, the Nikon D3S is truly an amazing piece of equipment capable of shooting up to 9 shots a second. The camera’s real claim to fame is its capability to shoot in almost no light, making it ideal for Friday night football games, weddings, and other events where using a flash might be distractive or prohibitive. At Friday’s game, I decided to push the limits far past anything that I’ve attempted before and I shot the entire 4th quarter of the game with an ISO setting of 10,000. To my surprise, I am happy with the photos and proud to display them along with the rest of the quarters.

The CMA Eagles held their own against a tough team and in fact, they had the lead for much of the first and second quarters when number 17 caught a long pass from the number 7 quarterback on CMA’s first offensive play. The crowd was loud after that play, and the game remained tight throughout the second quarter. The Northwood Panthers had a tough running game, and they scored going up the middle a few times in the second half. The Eagles made attempts to come back, but they never scored again. I thought they looked like a strong team for a group of guys who lost several seniors in key positions from last year. Ginny and I think it’s going to be a fun season. We hope to travel to some of the away games and keep up with the team.

Following are a handful of photos of the game; additional photos are located at: http://www.culverphotos.com/8_27_10_football

Culver Indiana Portrait Photographer: David Family Shoot

This past weekend, I was contacted by CMA’s football coach Andy Dorrel to do a family portrait of the David family, as all of the kids and grandchildren were in town at the same time. 24 of them in all! Little did I know that this family shoot was also being done for a campaign photo for Mr. David who is currently running for County Council. We decided that Culver Academy had the best scenery and setting for our session but unfortunately, we couldn’t control the weather. It was very beautiful but extremely hot and muggy. Keeping everyone happy, smiling, and sweat-free was a little difficult. We managed, though, and I got some shots that I’ll be proud knowing will be used in print advertising. I’ve posted a few of the photos here.
