Indiana Hockey Photography: CMA U16 vs. Ulysse Prep
Friday night, the CMA U16 Hockey team hosted Ulysse Prep School from Canada at Culver Academy. Considering the fact that the boys from Ulysse Prep had been on a bus 16 hours traveling to Culver, they played quite well and gave Culver a good fight. Being close throughout the game and tied going into the third period, the game could have gone to either team. During the third period, Culver scored twice and created a gap that Ulysse couldn’t overcome. The final score, Culver-4, Ulysse Prep-2.

Indiana Hockey Photography: Culver Academy Varsity Hockey vs. JSerra Catholic Ice Lions
Last night, as part of Culver’s first annual Corn Cup Tournament, the CMA Varsity Hockey Team played the JSerra Catholic Hockey Team from California. It was an exciting game that could have gone to either team. JSerra started the game by scoring quickly in the first period; it was countered with Culver scoring a goal. Culver won the game, though JSerra made them work for the win.

Indiana Hockey Photography: CMA vs. Shattuck
This past weekend, the Culver Academies Hockey teams hosted their long-time rivals from Shattuck St. Mary’s at Culver. Both the U16 team and the Prep team played Shattuck’s correpsonding teams twice over the weekend with games on Saturday and Sunday. Due to prior commitments, I was only able to photograph the Saturday night games.
In both the U16 game and the Prep team game, Culver played their hearts out. The games were some of the best action and fastest moving that I’ve witnessed at a High School level. Unfortunately, Shattuck St. Mary’s proved that their #1 rank in the country is well deserved as they won both games. Culver did prove to be worthy opponents, though they were not able to pull out a vistory.
I apologize for so many photos in this post. Below are my favorite photos from both the U16 and Prep games. For additional photos, please visit:

Indiana Sports Phototgrapher: CMA Varsity Hockey vs. Evansville
What a busy weekend! In attending 3 hockey games, a horse show, Vespers, and the Vespers Reception, I shot over 3,000 photos this past weekend. If you are visiting this site looking for a specific event that was photographed this weekend, please be patient. I’ll post entries as the galleries are uploaded. In the meantime, please fell free to visit www.culverphotos.com as all of the photos will eventually be posted there.
On Friday night, the CMA Varsity hockey team hosted Evansville at Culver Academy. The CMA Eagles played well and easily won another game. The game was fun and exciting to watch, though Evansville struggled against Culver. I’ve posted some of my favorite photos here. There are additional photos posted at:
Indiana Hockey Photographer: CMA Varsity vs. Penn High School
Last night, the CMA Varsity Hockey Team played against Penn High School’s U19 Hockey Team on Culver Academy’s campus in the Henderson Ice Rink. The CMA Eagles played very well, easily winning 6-0. There were a good deal of penalties throughout the game on both teams. One of these days, I’ll understand what those are, but for now, I have to plead ignorance.
Overall, I’m finding the lighting at the rink to be lacking for ideal photos, but I’ve been editing these in a different way than I did last year, and I like the results much better. Using a low-light lens and high ISO setting helps, but I’d love it if the ice would cooperate with me. I guess you can’t have it all. Enjoy the pictures. Some of you might recognize Dustin Cowell, a friend of ours whose dad Danny works at the Academy. Amber Cowell is in some of the CGA hockey pictures. Both of them are great athletes and it’s a lot of fun getting their pictures!

Culver Academy Hockey Photos: CMA U16 Hockey vs. Chicago Huskies
This afternoon, as part of the Culver Academy U16 Invitational Tournament, the CMA Eagles played the Chicago Huskies. For me, this game was a little different than all the other hockey games that I’ve photographed in that the game was played on the “B” rink at the Henderson Ice Rink. This was the first game that I’ve ever shot on the “B” rink and it posed some new challenges. Unlike the “A” rink, which is an NHL-sized ice rink, the “B” rink is an Olympic-sized ice rink, which means that it is a larger rink. Being larger meant that I had to get used to things as viewed through my zoom lens. I had to wait until their was action in the middle of the rink because my zoom wasn’t the best at reaching the far corners. Another difficulty that I faced was with the lighting. This rink is lit with a combination of incondescent and florescent lights, which required some tweeking of settings to get my photos to look right.
The game itself was a fun, exciting game to watch with both teams playing hard. Culver easily won the game, though I don’t think the Huskies should feel bad. If I had to guess, I suspect that the Huskies are not on the ice daily like the Culver Academy teams. Culver Academy Hockey Photos: CMA U16 Hockey vs. Mercer Chiefs
Today, as part of the Culver Academy Hockey Invitational Tournament, the CMA U16 Hockey Team played the Mercer Chiefs. I’m not sure if the Eagles were tired given it was an early morning game or if they started the game on a bad note, but Culver never got the upper hand. The Chiefs started by scoring in the first minute of the game. They scored their second goal during the second period. In the third period, the CMA Eagles finally got on the score board and everyone thought they might stage a comeback, but they weren’t able to pull it off. The final score was Culver 1, Chiefs 2.
The game between the Chiefs and the Eagles was a lot of fun to watch. The Chiefs showed good sportsmanship, and the game had almost no penalties. Both teams showed respect for one another. If Culver had to lose, I’m glad that it was to a team that played well and with fairness.

Culver Academy Hockey Photos: CMA U16 Hockey vs Ice Jets
This weekend the CMA Eacles U16 Hockey Team is hosting a large tournament on Culver Academy’s campus with 6 teams competing from around the nation. Tonight’s game was between Culver Academy and the Ice Jets. What a great game to watch! I’m not sure if the game was more exciting than others or if I was trigger happy with my camera. Either way, I shot over twice the number of photos that I normally shoot. It was difficult narrowing the number down. I ended up with over 300 photos that I felt were worthy of posting.
I guess if your teams has to lose, tonight would have been the way to do it. The Ice Jets started by scoring the first goal. Culver scored its first goal within the first 45 seconds of the second period. Culver followed this by scoring the next goal to take over the lead. A few minutes later, the Ice Jets scored again to tie the game again. The sceond period ended with a tie. During the third period, both teams scored to end the regular game with a 3-to-3 tie. Because this was a tournament game, sudden death play continued into overtime. The Eagles held the Ice Jets off for three and half minutes, but Culver ultimately lost when the other team scored. Regardless, both teams played well. To see more photos, go to www.culverphotos.com and check out this gallery: http://www.culverphotos.com/p579556671.
Culver Academy Hockey Photos: CMA Prep Hockey vs. Shattuck St. Mary’s
This afternoon the Culver Academy Prep Hockey team hosted Shattuck St. Mary for a matchup on Culver Academy’s campus. The game started strongly with the CMA Eagles scoring the first point right away in the first period. Culver held their lead for the remainder of that period and 17 minutes and 59 seconds of the second period. (The actual offical scoring time according to the ref was with 1.5 seconds left in the second half.) Though sitting next to the timer, it was closer than that as none of us knew if it was a valid point as it was SO CLOSE to the buzzer.) Culver had problems in the third period that they couldn’t recover from; the final score was Culver 2, St. mary’s 4. You can find more photographs at www.culverphotos.com.
Culver Academy Hockey Photos: CMA Prep Hockey vs. St. Mary’s (Game 2)
Today was the rematch between Culver’s Prep Hockey team and St. Mary’s Hockey team. Unfortunately, I was able to stay for just 2 of the 3 periods due to a prior engagement. I’m told that I missed a great 3rd period. In what I did watch, St. Mary’s learned from the game last night and proved to be a tough opponent in this game. I’m told that the final score ended in a tie 1-to-1 with Culver scoring in the last seconds of the game for a tie.
